IV  Sojourn

Our concert will feature Baker City and the Baker City musicians as a local treasure!
Our guests this time are the Baker City High School Band with Jeff Sizer who is the Teacher/conductor and several other notable Baker performers that are part of our GRSO!

The concert will open with a short and very brilliant work for band by Brian Balmages, who is a young composer quite recognized for band music.

After that we will continue with the Mozart Concerto for Flute in D Major K.314, which is one of the most famous and difficult.  We have a young virtuoso from Baker City with us: Rebekah Rushton, and nobody should miss it!  Our community continues delivering very high standard players; we are proud of them and we should support them!

For the next work the Grande Ronde Symphony and the Baker Band will join forces making a huge instrumental ensemble to perform a symphonic and band arrangement of Gershwin classics, including sections of Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris and the Cuban Overture.  Warren Barker is  famous arranger for bands yet it was our own colleague Jeff Sizer who wrote the string parts to make possible this extraordinary adaptation.

Then the first half will end with an arrangement by Jeff Sizer of a traditional Irish song (the Londonderry Air), better known by the text “Danny Boy” with maestro Sizer soloing in the trombone.

After the intermission we will do the world premiere of an extraordinary work by one of our own Eastern Oregon University composes.  Dr. John Rinehart Second Symphony.
This is a monumental work based on British and American traditions, full of hemiolas, which is a musical characteristic originating in the clash between the Spanish and Aztec cultures in the 16th century and bouncing back to Europe henceforth.  Mtro. Rinehart tells us about his work the following:

Rinehart’s Symphony Number 2 was composed in 2001-2002. The version performed here is a slightly revised version from 2014. The symphony draws its inspiration and compositional form from the pastoral and folk-music revival of the early 20th Century in England as advanced by Gustav Holst, Percy Grainger, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and others. The music therefore is often modal and strongly diatonic, reflecting the simple style of the material it seeks to emulate.

The work is very strong and very beautiful!  Please do not miss it as this will be a unique event!

Ticket prices are $10 Adult, $8 Senior, $2 EOU students, $1 High School students, K- 7 is no charge. Tickets are on sale at the door as well as Direct Music Source, EOU Bookstore, in La Grande, Betty’s Books in Baker City.
