Grande Ronde Symphony Orchestra Presents: War and Peace
Grande Ronde Symphony Association is pleased to invite everyone to the second concert of its 70th musical season. This concert will take place on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at 7:00 pm. (Please note the new start time) in McKenzie Theater on the EOU campus in La Grande.
This concert’s theme is “War and Peace” (not a typo) and pulls together music that resulted from the threat of and the brutality of war. The opening piece is “Mars” from The Planets by Gustav Holst. This piece was a direct result of the turmoil in the world that resulted in World War I. The next piece will be the “Overture” from Music for the Royal Fireworks by George Frideric Handel which celebrated the end of the War of Austrian Succession in 1748. The first half of the concert program will end with the rousing 1812 Overture by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. This too was a celebratory piece of music—celebrating the Russian defense against Napoleon’s invading army in 1812.
The second half of the concert will feature Symphony No. 7 by the tortured soul of Ludwig van Beethoven. This brilliant piece of music premiered at a charity concert for the soldiers wounded and sacrificed in the Battle of Hanau in the early nineteenth century. The second movement of the symphony, Allegretto, was very well received at this premiere with the audience demanding an encore.
The concert will begin at 7:00 pm, our new start time which is favorable to a broader spectrum of ages. Doors will open at 6:30 pm. There will be an intermission.
