The Grande Ronde Symphony Association is very proud to announce the first chamber concert of the season, set for Friday, September 29, 2017, 7:00 pm, 705 S. 18th Street, La Grande. (Please note the new start time of 7:00 pm to make it easier for more folks to attend our concerts.)
This concert will feature David Hyun-su Kim on fortepiano and Lauren Basney on violin. David and Lauren hail from Walla Walla, WA where David is a professor of piano and theory at Whitman College and Lauren is a period violinist and featured soloist.
David Hyun-su Kim graduated from Cornell University in chemistry in 1999. The lab stool was soon replaced by the piano bench and he received a degree in music in 2003. He earned his master’s degrees at Yale in piano performance and in historical performance from Harvard. He earned his doctorate from the New England Conservatory in 2013. He has been at Whitman College since then while also performing as a featured soloist around the country and the world.
Lauren Basney attended Juilliard School receiving her Bachelor’s in 2001. She received her masters from Yale in 2005 and her doctorate from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2013. Lauren is an enthusiastic chamber musician with performances in various small groups regionally, nationally, and internationally using both modern instruments and on instruments with a period set up. Lauren has been concertmaster and as principal second violin under numerous well-known conductors.
This first concert will feature 19th century instruments that would have been familiar to Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, etc. with historically informed repertoire appropriate to the vintage instruments. The fortepiano will be the featured instrument. David will talk about his 19th century instrument and will also demonstrate a few things besides performing with Lauren. By the way, the fortepiano is an early piano and got its name from Italian for “loud-soft.” This concert will be a treat for all the senses!
The Grande Ronde Symphony Association is honored to host Lauren Basney and David Kim for the September 29th Chamber Concert. This will be a wonderful evening of great period music by very accomplished musicians. Doors open at 6:15 pm with the performance commencing at 7:00 pm. Following the concert, attendees will enjoy delicious refreshments and punch provided by the great cooks of the Grande Ronde Symphony Association.
