The next concert in the 2017-2018 Chamber Concert series, sponsored by the Grande Ronde Symphony Association, will present Sharon and David Nichols of Seattle on Friday, March 16th at 7:00 pm at 307 C Avenue in La Grande.
Sharon and David will be performing a variety of music from the Classic music style to more contemporary music, finishing with a ragtime number. The composers on the program include George Frideric Handel, Ludwig van Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn, Claude Debussy, Ken Medema, and Scott Joplin.
Sharon Nichols grew up mostly in Oregon in a musical family. Sharon’s younger sister is Grande Ronde Symphony Orchestra’s very own Cheryl Hudson. Sharon’s band teacher in McMinnville was La Grande High School’s Class of 1939 graduate John McManus. (John McManus went on to become a music professor at the University of Oregon. He later made a large contribution to the La Grande school’s music program.) Sharon had a double major in college in music, emphasis on flute, in combination with mathematics. Sharon currently plays flute and sings solos, often accompanied by her husband David on piano.
David Nichols grew up in Texas where he was introduced at a very young age to the reed organ. He continued his education pursuing Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctorate degrees, not in music, but in physics! David currently is the organist and pianist at a large church in Seattle. This job makes full use of his versatility. David especially enjoys performing with Sharon at various venues around the state of Washington and the country. According to GRSA President, Patty Sandoz, “We are all very excited to present David and Sharon Nichols at this chamber concert as they share their musical talents for the enjoyment of all those in attendance. We are also excited to meet Cheryl Hudson’s sister and brother-in-law!”
Doors open at 6:00 pm and the performance will begin at 7:00 pm (note the new time for all GRSA concerts). Chamber season ticket passes for this and the remaining two chamber concerts may be purchased for $75 per person through the GRSA at P.O. Box 824, La Grande, OR 97850 or on the GRSA website. Single tickets may be purchased at the door for $25 each. Refreshments, punch, and wine will be offered following the concert, a perfect way to cap a wonderful evening of music.
