Concerto/Aria Competition

The GRS offers three categories with the Concerto + Aria Competition, all with monetary compensation:

  • The Young Student category which is restricted to Sixth grade through High School age students from eastern Oregon or SE Washington.

  • The Advanced Student will be restricted to college-bound seniors in high school and students currently enrolled at a public or private University or College with a maximum age restriction of 26.

  • The Open category, instrumentalist or vocalist, will accept applicants of any age, but is restricted to those who reside in Oregon, Idaho, or Washington states.

Concerto+Aria Application Deadline: February 1, 2024

Recipients

  • 2017: Sidney Tovey, a junior from Hermiston High School. She performed Concerto No. 3 for Violin and Orchestra by Camille Saint-Saens on May 31st, 2017.

  • 2018: Hannah Schafer, a sophomore from College Place, Washington. She performed the first movement of Violin Concerto in E Minor by Mendelssohn on May 30th, 2018.

  • 2019: Trevor Natiuk, a freshman at Walla Walla University. He performed the first movement of Piano Concerto by Schumann on May 29th, 2019.

  • 2021: Young Student Award – Sarah Plummer who is a Junior at Baker High School. She performed the first movement of the violin Concerto No. 5 by Seitz on May 26, 2021, with the GR String Orchestra.

  • 2022: Young Student Award – Lana Emerson, pianist; Advanced Student Award – Yena Cho violin; Open Category Award – Anson Sin, piano.

  • 2023: Young Student Award – Alice Mohlman, piano; Advanced Student Award – Hannah Schafer, violin; Open Award – Shahayla Ononaiye, soprano-vocal

The winners of these categories are invited to perform solo with the Grande Ronde Symphony Orchestra in concert during next year’s performance season.
